Cedar is the deck for people who want real wood and are willing to look after it. It has a colour and smell nothing manufactured copies, it stays cooler underfoot than dark composite, and it costs less than composite to build.
Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, which is why it outlasts untreated softwood. It is not maintenance-free. Calgary's UV at altitude and its freeze-thaw cycles pull the colour out of bare cedar within a season or two, and it goes silver-grey.
Some people like the grey. If you want to keep the warm colour, plan on a penetrating stain every one to three years, more often on a south-facing deck that takes full sun. That upkeep is the real cost of cedar, and it's worth pricing in before you choose it.
If that sounds like more work than you want, composite gets you a wood look without the staining. If the budget is the main concern, pressure treated costs less up front.
