Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to common questions about our fence & deck building process, customization options, permits, and materials.

How long does a cedar deck last in Calgary?

With basic maintenance, a well-built cedar deck typically lasts 20 to 25 years in the Calgary climate. The structure beneath it — pressure-treated framing on frost-depth footings — is engineered to outlast the boards themselves.

How often does cedar need to be stained or sealed?

Plan on a clean and re-coat every 2 to 3 years depending on sun exposure — south-facing decks weather fastest. Left uncoated, cedar silvers to a natural grey without losing structural integrity, a look some homeowners prefer.

Do I need a permit for a cedar deck in Calgary?

Most decks higher than 0.6 m (2 ft) above grade require a permit in Calgary, and attached decks usually do regardless of height. We handle the permit application and manage inspections as part of every build.

Is cedar cheaper than composite decking?

Up front, yes — cedar usually comes in below composite on installed cost. Composite closes the gap over time through lower maintenance. If you love real wood and don’t mind re-staining every few years, cedar is excellent value.
