When there's a room, a garage or a walkway under your deck, the surface has to keep water out, not just shed it. A Duradek vinyl membrane is a continuous waterproof sheet over a sloped plywood deck, so the space below stays dry.
A board deck, even composite, has gaps between the boards by design. That's fine over grass. It's not fine over your living room.
The frame is built with a slight slope so water runs off rather than pooling. Plywood sheathing goes over the frame, and the vinyl membrane is laid over that and heat-welded at the seams, with the edges wrapped and flashed so water can't get in behind them. The detailing at the walls and doorways is where a membrane deck succeeds or fails, and it's where most of the care goes.
Quality vinyl membranes typically last 20 to 30 years with basic care: sweep it, wash it, and don't drag metal furniture legs across it.
