How Much Does a Deck Cost in Calgary?

A deck in Calgary costs $28 to $58 per square foot installed, depending on the material. That puts a typical 12 × 16 deck between $5,376 and $11,136, and a large 20 × 20 between $11,200 and $23,200. Those are our own installed prices — materials, labour, frost-depth footings and finishing, not lumber off a shelf.
The rest of this page is where inside those ranges your deck lands, and why.

What moves you from the bottom of a range to the top
The material sets the band. These decide where in it you land.
Height off the ground. A ground-level deck is the cheapest thing we build. Once the surface passes 0.6 m you're into guards, deeper footings and a building permit, and the cost per square foot climbs. A walkout-level deck at second-storey height can cost half again what the same square footage costs at grade.
Shape. Every corner is a cut, a joist hanger and a seam. A plain rectangle uses the material efficiently. An angled or multi-level deck with a bay can add 15–25% in labour and waste on the same footprint.
Stairs. A stair run is one of the most labour-intensive parts of a deck relative to the area it adds. A single short flight is minor; a long run to grade from a raised deck is a real line item.
Railing. This is the swing people underestimate. Pressure treated picket railing is the cheap end. Aluminium is a step up. Frameless glass can cost more per linear foot than the deck costs per square foot — on a small deck with a long railing run, the railing can approach the cost of everything else.
Site access and ground conditions. If we can't get equipment to the back yard, footings get dug by hand. Rock, fill or a high water table changes the excavation.
Permits. A building permit is $205.92 and a development permit, where the setbacks trigger one, is $550.00 as of September 2026. Small against the build, but they're real and they're not always quoted. We cover what triggers each in our guide to Calgary deck permits.

Why Calgary costs what it does
Two things push Alberta deck prices above what you'll read on an American site.
Frost-depth footings. Our frost line means footings go well below grade — deeper than most of the continent. That's excavation and concrete before a single board is laid, and it's not optional if you want a deck that doesn't move.
A short season. The build window here is compressed, which concentrates demand into a few months. Booking in the off-season is the one reliable way to influence price that has nothing to do with the deck itself.

What the cheapest quote usually means
If one quote comes in well under the others, it's normally one of four things: footings that don't reach frost depth, joists spaced wider than the decking is rated for, the permit left to you, or the railing quoted separately. All four are recoverable at quote stage and expensive afterwards.
Ask any builder to state footing depth, joist spacing and whether permits are included. The answers are quick and they explain most price gaps.
Going deeper on material
Cost per square foot is only half the question — the other half is what the deck costs to own. Wood needs staining every one to three years; composite doesn't. We've broken each down separately:
- Pressure treated deck cost in Calgary — the budget build, what it really costs over fifteen years
- Composite deck cost in Calgary — the highest build cost and why it can still be the cheapest option
